What are our key curriculum drivers and why have we chosen them?
Our school has used local knowledge and reports to carefully consider what our children need to learn in relation to the context that they are growing up in. The following aspects run as key drivers through our curriculum to ensure our specific pupil needs are met.
Globally aware: Research tells us that there has never been a more important time for young people to understand what is going on in the world. With good knowledge about global issues, our pupils will realise the importance of taking good care of our planet. We want them to have the confidence to travel and explore as they grow older, which will open up new opportunities for their futures.
Culturally aware: As our school and community is predominantly white British our children need to understand how Britain and other parts of the world are multi-cultural and why this should be celebrated. We aim to develop children’s understanding of national and international culture so that they are tolerant and respectful towards others.
Self-aware: Understanding more about themselves both physically and emotionally will allow our pupils to reflect and continuously improve. High rates of obesity in our area mean that our children need to be taught how to stay healthy and have daily opportunities to enjoy being active. We want our pupils to take responsibility for their actions, looking after themselves and others.
Key Stage Ready and Ambitious: We want children to be completely ready for the next stage in their education both spiritually and academically. They should have opportunities to develop their awareness of the possibilities for their future and have an idea of how to reach their goals.

Globally Aware
In 2022 we met the criteria for the British Council International School Award who commented that "It is wonderful to see that Kelsey Primary School are aware of the lack of opportunities in your immediate environment and are trying to compensate for that via other means with long-term plans and opportunities for pupils." .
Culturally Aware
We strive to ensure our children learn, develop and demonstrate cultural awareness and British Values. We have an exciting partnership with The Magooli Children's Education Center school in Namayingo, Uganda. Together we work on projects to support each other and help our pupils to learn more about each other’s cultures.

Self-Aware
Through our PSHE program of study (Jigsaw), we encourage pupils to develop their self awareness. This is then reinforced throughout all areas of the curriculum and everyday school life.
Key Stage Ready and Ambitious
We are part of the local schools sports partnership, which means that we regularly visit our neighbouring secondary schools (Caistor Yarborough, Caistor Grammar, De Aston School) to take part in activities and become familar with their sites. Key stage two pupils are often invited to events at our neighbouring secondary schools, from drama to computing and more. We promote open evenings for our neighbouring secondary schools and follow our PSHE program of study for Year 6 pupils, which focuses on their transition to secondary school.
We think and talk a lot about our ambitions for adult life, about what careers our pupils would love to have and we use assembly time to highlight inspiration people who have achieved so much in their careers.
Our EYFS and KS1 pupils are constantly working on their readiness for the next phase in their education, we plan in transition activities throughout the school year.

Our aim is to enable learning to be accessible for all. Here are a few tools we use to do this...
Educational Visits
Our pupils visit top UK destinations as part of their curriculum enrichment. All pupils have opportunities to visit the most exciting local and national venues which are interlinked with our curriculum. Such examples include London, The National Space Centre, The Deep and Religious places of worship. Additionally, residential visits are offered in Years 3/4 and 6, giving children the chance to explore and develop important outdoor and adventurous skills!
Such visits are carefully mapped out to complement as many subject areas as possible and to ensure that our pupils have regular opportunities to develop our Key Curriculum Drivers and School Values.

Implementation
What is our pedagogy?
We plan for learning to progress beyond early shallow learning (recall of facts, information, methods) to deep and meaningful learning where pupils actively apply their understanding, making comparisons, arguing and demonstrating higher order thinking skills. Research such as Blooms Taxonomy shows that this leads to better retention of learning.
Super Starters!
We have developed our own simple lesson starter for non-core subjects which provide pupils with weekly opportunities to refresh longer term knowledge.
